ClassHook

I'm always on the look for multimedia components that can engage students in discussion or inquiry and this site looks to have all that! ClassHook was a "best of" website recommendation by AASL and has been reviewed by Common Sense Media as a great tool for engaging students in critical thinking. The whole premise of this website is a curated library of movie and TV show clips. So often a small snippet of a video will demonstrate a concept, or be the perfect hook for launching a lesson, but I don't have the video, and now I'm very thoughtful of copyright and fair use guidelines. Never fear, ClassHook not only has browsable subjects and genre areas, but they also curate by major standards, AND there is a section on "copyright"! This site states that they host the video content on YouTube and use Content ID system to verify that the small quantity of video clip is usable and copyright permissible. Having someone else do the work of getting permission is a huge win for me!

There are tons of downloadable lesson plans and ideas for discussion and use, and there are several video tutorials available as well. Teachers can create an account and use the website in person with students, and there is also a feature to roster students for distance learning or asynchronous learning, however NYS requires the Ed Law 2d contract in place before rostering students. There is a basic level that is free, but with limited video watching monthly. Premium level is $8/month and if you are advocating for this resource in your school or district then group pricing is available.

Anything that can hook students into learning with popular movies, videos and media is a teaching win for me!

Classroom Screen

This week's recommended digital resource is Classroom Screen. This tool has been a game changer for me. Any of us who have been teaching since before interactive boards, can remember using chalkboards (yes, I'm that old) and whiteboards to post directions, tips, tools, and reminders for students. Classroom Screen brings those tools to the digital space and gives them an upgrade! You can put up timers, noise level alerts, drawing tools (hello, math topics!), QR codes, text boxes (perfect for bulleted directions), dice, polling, and random name generator or group creator. I love the group creator feature--it makes collaborative work time go faster and can be randomized or created by the teacher.   There are dozens of backgrounds and you can create multiple scenes, perfect for each content area or grade level. This is a classroom management must have, and gives students the power of managing themselves without teacher interaction. It also helps students of all abilities an...
